Telematics: Driving Your Success Forward

CMS, a courier company, has successfully cut down on maintenance costs by upgrading its fleet management system. Like many logistics and fleet managers, CMS grappled with the challenge of running their fleet efficiently while providing great customer service.

Founded in 1968 in New York and now based in London, CMS operates with a fleet of 29 vehicles and 60 drivers, serving both local and international customers. The company has always strived to offer top-quality services while being environmentally conscious. They set goals to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, aiming for sustainable yet profitable operations.

To improve efficiency, CMS adopted a fleet monitoring system from Geotab that tracks vehicle and driver performance. This system helps ensure driver safety, enhances vehicle performance, boosts productivity, and lowers fuel and maintenance costs. Geotab’s user-friendly device, the Geotab Go, plugs into a vehicle’s OBD II port. It offers advanced features like GPS tracking, g-force monitoring, engine and battery health checks, and more.

Using the MyGeotab software, fleet managers can access all this information on one platform from any device, whether it’s a desktop, laptop, smartphone, or tablet. To stay compliant with regulations, CMS drivers use the Geotab Drive app for vehicle inspections and driver identification, which they can complete right from their mobile devices.

CMS also explored the Geotab Marketplace and introduced the Driver Challenge add-in to motivate their drivers through gamification. This tool turns everyday driving into a friendly competition, giving drivers scores and awarding badges based on their performance in key areas. Fleet managers can track trends and spot areas needing improvement while recognizing top-performing drivers.

Initially, CMS used this add-in to cut down fuel consumption and driving complaints, as well as to reduce accidents. They also monitored driver habits like speeding, harsh acceleration, and seat belt usage. As a result, CMS saw significant improvements, such as an average increase of 1.2 km per litre for their vehicles. The friendly competition among drivers led to a drop in speeding incidents and vehicle abuse, reducing speeding tickets and maintenance needs.

Fleet managers at CMS ensure that all drivers correctly use the app to assign vehicles and conduct daily checks, which enhances transparency. This system allows CMS to monitor which driver is in each vehicle during different shifts and provides real-time updates to the MyGeotab software. This feature delivers detailed reports on driver logs, remaining hours, and alerts for violations.

In summary, by embracing Geotab’s technology, CMS has improved fleet efficiency, boosted driver performance, and achieved substantial cost savings.
