Revolutionary Autonomous Innovations Unveiled at Frankfurt Motor Show
Ian Fletcher, a principal analyst at IHS Markit, is examining the latest trends in electrification and autonomous technology featured at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week.
Car manufacturers at the show are addressing some of the industry’s most pressing issues, including electrification, connectivity, and autonomy, while still appealing to car enthusiasts. This showcases the varied challenges OEMs face in satisfying both consumer expectations and regulatory standards. Notably, the three major German brands—BMW, Mercedes, and Audi—are leading the charge in these innovations.
BMW unveiled several new models, including the sportier i3S and the Mini Electric Concept, previewing their upcoming Mini EV slated for 2019. In the spotlight was the BMW i Vision Dynamics, a four-door Gran Coupé designed with a long wheelbase, short overhangs, and a striking kidney grille. The electric powertrain promises 0-100 km/h acceleration in four seconds, a top speed of 200 km/h, and a range of 600 km on a single charge. BMW plans to mass-produce this model as part of a lineup of 25 electrified vehicles, including 12 battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
Additionally, BMW Motorsport showcased the BMW M8 GTE, a racing version of the upcoming BMW 8-Series. Designed for competition in events like the 2018 World Endurance Championship, the M8 GTE features a lightweight composite body, larger aerodynamic aids, a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing around 500 bhp, and a six-speed sequential transmission.
Daimler presented multiple concepts reflecting its CASE (Connected, Autonomous, Shared, and Electric) strategy. CEO Dieter Zetsche announced plans to offer an electrified variant for every model by 2022, totaling around 50. This includes the PHEV S560e, boasting a 50 km electric-only range, and the Concept EQA, a sleek five-door hatchback with dual electric motors providing 200kW power and 500Nm torque. The Concept EQA offers customizable battery sizes with up to 400 km of range and rapid charging capabilities.
Daimler also introduced the Smart Vision EQ ForTwo and confirmed that the Smart brand will transition to fully electric by 2020.
