Renesas Revolutionizes Nissan Leaf with Cutting-Edge Automated Parking Technology

The new Nissan Leaf, which just debuted this week, features Renesas R-Car system-on-chip for its infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), as well as the RH850 automotive control MCU for its ProPilot Park system—a fully automated parking solution.

This parking system can identify suitable parking spaces, ensure there are no obstacles, and manage acceleration, braking, steering, and gear shifting. The R-Car SoC includes an Imp parallel image processor, which handles high-resolution images from CMOS cameras, performing quick and efficient signal processing. The MCU then takes commands from the SoC and transmits them to various electronic control units (ECUs) in the car, making safe and reliable parking possible.

“Nissan has always been at the forefront of driving assistant technologies, especially with our around view monitors, thanks to Renesas’ image processors,” said Takashi Yoshizawa, vice president at Nissan Motor. “I’m thrilled that we’ve teamed up with Renesas to bring the ProPilot Park feature to the new Nissan Leaf.”

Renesas, leveraging its new Autonomy platform for ADAS and automated driving, aims to offer a safe, secure, and convenient driving experience through innovations designed for next-generation vehicles.

“From our extensive experience in the automotive industry, we know that beyond performance and quality, managing heat, space, and other factors is crucial,” said Ryuji Omura, executive vice president at Renesas Electronics. “We’re proud that Nissan chose our automotive chips for their new automated-parking system, and we are committed to delivering groundbreaking technologies for autonomous driving, helping advance the automotive sector.”
