Intel Hails Elaine Chao’s Appointment as a Thrilling Opportunity
Intel is excited about Elaine Chao’s appointment as the new US Secretary of Transportation. They see it as a great chance for the government and industry to join forces to lead the way in self-driving cars and smart infrastructure.
Doug Davis, Intel’s senior VP and head of the automated driving group, mentioned that the automotive and transportation industries are on the brink of a big transformation. Car manufacturers, transportation companies, and technology providers worldwide are accepting vehicle automation to boost safety, efficiency, and mobility.
Davis noted that self-driving vehicles and new mobility services are arriving much sooner than many had expected. He praised Secretary Chao for her dedication to transportation advancements and private sector innovation, along with her focus on public-private partnerships.
Back in the summer of 2016, Davis was the only tech expert invited to testify before the US Senate Commerce Committee about how IoT could modernize US transportation and infrastructure.
“I was part of a small panel with prominent figures from the transportation and infrastructure sectors, each offering unique insights on making the US a global leader in the swiftly changing transportation market,” Davis said. “With Secretary Chao and the new congress, Intel is eager to continue collaborating with the government to modernize our infrastructure and update public policies to keep pace with innovation.”
Revamping American infrastructure means changing how urban and city planning is approached, according to Davis. It will involve installing millions of cameras and sensors to enhance road safety and efficiency, along with embedding wireless chips in traffic signals, street lights, parking meters, and lots. These components can gather, analyze, and share real-time information with the next generation of transportation modes.
Inside vehicles, new technologies are making cars smarter, safer, and more efficient. For instance, 5G connectivity will help vehicles quickly detect surroundings, make safety decisions, and communicate with other vehicles and infrastructure. Cars will also share data with the cloud for further analysis.
Intel is working hard to provide the extraordinary computing power and security needed for these advancements. Whether it’s 5G or cutting-edge artificial intelligence, Intel is collaborating with industry partners to integrate these innovations into the nation’s transportation system.
These tech breakthroughs promise huge productivity gains and societal benefits. Davis asked us to imagine a doctor receiving and analyzing critical medical records in a self-driving car on the way to a hospital, or an entrepreneur conducting a business meeting via video conference while traveling.
Autonomous driving is set to revolutionize our lives by saving lives, offering new mobility options for the elderly and disabled, reducing traffic congestion, and increasing efficiency across the transportation system and businesses globally.
With such significant benefits on the horizon, Intel is excited to continue its efforts in shaping the future of transportation.
