Cariad and Harman Seamlessly Integrate Webex by Cisco into Audi Vehicles
Cisco and Audi are teaming up with Volkswagen’s software company, Cariad, and Samsung’s Harman to improve mobile car collaboration for hybrid workers. Starting with the 2024 model year, certain Audi cars will offer the Webex app to support this new way of working.
As the idea of hybrid work becomes more common, people want flexible and easy solutions to work from anywhere. The modern workspace isn’t just a desk—it’s wherever you need it to be. Cisco’s collaboration with Audi aims to meet this demand by integrating the Webex app into Audi’s in-vehicle application store. This store, developed by Cariad and Harman, will eventually be available in more Volkswagen brands.
Jeetu Patel, Cisco’s Executive Vice President, says, “We’re transforming the connected car into an extension of the workplace, making it easier for people to stay productive no matter where they are.”
The goal of this partnership is to make hybrid work more adaptable. People can now enjoy personalized work experiences from any location. The Webex app, which can be downloaded directly onto an Audi’s infotainment system, eliminates the need for a phone during setup. The app store adheres to Volkswagen’s safety standards, ensuring a smooth transition from device-based meetings to in-car meetings.
When driving, Webex switches to audio-only mode so drivers can join meetings without distraction. When parked, they get the full Webex experience, including viewing participants, shared content, and closed captions. The app also features AI for noise removal and voice optimization, making sure the driver’s voice is clear without background noise.
Starting in July 2023, the app store will be available in new Audi models like the A4, A5, Q5, A6, A7, A8, Q8 E-Tron, and E-Tron GT across Europe, the USA, Canada, Mexico, and other regions. Cisco has a global reach, working with over 32,000 transportation companies in 169 countries and holding 25,000 transportation-related patents. This Audi partnership is part of their broader Webex for Automobiles initiative, which includes collaborations with Ford and Mercedes-Benz.
Riclef Schmidt-Clausen, Cariad’s Senior Vice President, says, “We aim to advance the digital in-car experience, making the car a smart companion for drivers.” Albert Jordan, Vice President at Harman, adds, “Our Harman Ignite store simplifies the process for developers to create and optimize content for vehicles, ensuring a safe and enhanced user experience. Collaborations like this are changing the in-car experience, keeping drivers connected to what they value most.”
