Audi Drives Innovation with Futuristic Autonomous Concept Cars
At the Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi unveiled its autonomous driving strategy, featuring the new Audi A8, which comes standard with Level 3 conditional automated driving. Audi also showcased two concept cars highlighting their vision for Levels 4 and 5 autonomous driving.
The A8 is touted as the first mass-produced car ready for conditional automated driving at Level 3, adhering to international standards. On highways and multi-lane motorways with barriers separating traffic directions, the Audi AI traffic jam pilot can manage driving in slow-moving conditions up to 60 km/h.
This system handles starting, accelerating, steering, and braking within its lane. When the AI traffic jam pilot is activated via a button on the center console, the driver can remove their foot from the accelerator and hands off the steering wheel for extended periods. Unlike Level 2 automation, drivers don’t need to constantly watch the car. Depending on national regulations, drivers can engage in other activities using the car’s infotainment system. However, they must stay alert and be ready to take over when prompted.
The traffic jam pilot relies on two key technologies: a central driver assistance controller that generates a comprehensive image of the surroundings by integrating sensor data, and a radar unit that performs additional data fusion. A laser scanner also provides detailed information about nearby vehicles and road structures.
One of the concept cars is an SUV coupé, inspired by the Audi E-Tron Sportback concept. It features dynamic lines, advanced lighting technology, a functional and elegant interior, and an electric Quattro drive powered by three electric motors with a peak output of 370 kW. The car uses artificial intelligence and machine learning, seamlessly networked with the cloud and other vehicles (car-to-X), to proactively and empathetically learn and adapt. It supports a highway pilot that can take over driving at speeds up to 130 km/h and perform automatic lane changes.
The second concept car, designed for long journeys, operates autonomously and offers occupants the freedom to relax without focusing on the road. Equipped with four electric motors, this high-end D segment vehicle boasts a range of 700 to 800 km.
Audi is also strengthening its partnership with Here Technologies. The A8 uses several services and technologies from Here, including digital navigation maps and location-based services. Audi holds a stake in Here, and both companies are working closely to enhance these technologies.
