Continental Secures the Future with Acquisition of Cyber-Security Leader Argus

Continental has bolstered its automotive cybersecurity capabilities by acquiring Argus Cyber Security, an Israeli company. Argus will now become part of Continental’s independent software division, Elektrobit.

With cars becoming more connected, software is emerging as the key driver for intelligent, efficient, and automated mobility. By 2020, millions of these high-tech vehicles will be on the roads worldwide, interacting as part of the Internet of Things (IoT).

However, as vehicles become more connected, they also become targets for cyber-attacks, which can pose significant risks to both human lives and property. To counter these threats, automakers and suppliers globally are implementing strategies to safeguard their vehicles.

Helmut Matschi, a member of Continental’s executive board, stated, “Secure mobility is the only true intelligent mobility. By acquiring Argus Cyber Security, we’re boosting our ability to provide top-notch automotive cybersecurity services to customers worldwide, ensuring smarter and safer mobility.”

Argus, founded in 2013 by cybersecurity experts in Israel, is based in Tel Aviv and employs over 70 people. They have developed market-ready solutions backed by 38 granted and pending patents. Argus has also established important collaborations within the industry and has been delivering projects to vehicle manufacturers and suppliers around the globe. Their presence extends to Japan, Germany, and North America.

By joining forces, Continental and Argus will offer comprehensive, multi-layered security services. These include intrusion detection and prevention, attack surface protection, and fleet cybersecurity monitoring and management through a dedicated operations center. Additionally, they will provide over-the-air software updates.

Ofer Ben-Noon, co-founder and CEO of Argus, shared, “Our mission is to safeguard all vehicles from cyber threats. Partnering with Continental and Elektrobit allows us to accelerate this mission. Given the ongoing development of global automotive cybersecurity regulations and the existing millions of connected cars, this merger couldn’t come at a better time. Together, we will streamline the market introduction and help manufacturers secure their vehicles against cyber-attacks.”

Argus will continue to maintain its commercial relationships with automotive suppliers globally. This collaboration combines Continental’s automotive expertise, Argus’ cybersecurity technology, and Elektrobit’s software knowledge, creating a unique partnership in the automotive industry.

Alexander Kocher, president, and managing director of Elektrobit, added, “As we navigate a world dominated by software-defined vehicles and unique challenges, we are committed to developing new collaborative approaches. Elektrobit and Argus have been partners in cybersecurity and software updates since 2016. By adding Argus to our team, we can further enhance our software offerings, delivering complete security solutions to the automotive industry. This will empower car makers and suppliers to develop safer, smarter, and more efficient vehicles.”
