Visteon Elevates Vehicle Display Contrast to New Heights

Visteon has created a system that significantly improves the contrast ratio of vehicle displays. This innovative solution uses special algorithms to control an array of LEDs positioned behind the display, delivering light precisely where it’s needed. This not only enhances dark scenes but also lowers power consumption.

Their local dimming technology works seamlessly with thin, curved, and minimal border screens, making the display quality appear higher while reducing the halo effect often seen around bright objects. Thanks to the fewer LED zones needed, power consumption is cut by up to 70% compared to other technologies.

The technology is ready for production and compatible with electric vehicle systems, along with other Visteon display technologies like active privacy and true-color image enhancement. By adjusting the brightness of LEDs in different screen areas based on the image content, the system dynamically improves contrast from 1,000:1 to an impressive 10,000:1. This tenfold improvement is made possible as the LEDs behind brighter regions become more intense, whereas they dim or turn off behind darker areas.

In addition to better contrast, this algorithm-driven LED control also minimizes power usage by calculating the exact amount of light needed. According to Qais Sharif, Visteon’s vice president, “The market is increasingly seeking high-quality displays with lower power consumption. Our local dimming technology not only boosts contrast ratios affordably but also significantly reduces power use. This approach delivers high visual quality and cost-effectiveness, demonstrating Visteon’s strength in display optics and algorithms. Our system strikes a balance between cost, contrast, and managing image halos.”
