Nexteer Unveils Groundbreaking Autonomous-Ready Steering at NAIAS

At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Nexteer Automotive introduced two new steering technologies aimed at advancing vehicle automation.

The first technology, Steering on Demand, allows seamless transitions between manual and automated driving for vehicles with SAE level three, four, and five automation. Drivers can switch control easily and customize their driving experience with options like sport mode, comfort mode, and manual override.

The second innovation, Quiet Wheel Steering, keeps the steering wheel stationary during automated driving. This feature removes the risk associated with a rapidly spinning steering wheel, enhancing driver safety and comfort. Additionally, vehicles equipped with this technology can have a retractable steering column, which provides more space for the driver when automated driving is active.

Frank Lubischer, Nexteer’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation. He explained that the rapid advancement in mobility has led Nexteer to adopt a mixed approach combining traditional and rapid prototyping methods. This blend allows for faster development and improvement of new ideas, accelerating the move from concept to production.

Lubischer noted that these new technologies stem from Nexteer’s dedicated research and development efforts. The goal is to make automated driving safer and more intuitive as the industry progresses.

Both new technologies rely on Nexteer’s steer-by-wire system, which eliminates the need for a mechanical connection between the steering wheel and road wheels. This system is enhanced with sensors and mechanical technologies to ensure reliable performance and responsive steering.

Nexteer Automotive has over 13,000 employees serving more than 50 customers worldwide. The company operates 24 manufacturing plants, five regional engineering centers, and 11 customer service centers across North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Some of its notable clients include BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, GM, PSA Group, Toyota, and VW, along with car manufacturers in India and China.
