Airbus and Helsing Join Forces to Launch AI-Powered Wingman Unmanned Platform

Airbus Defence and Space and Helsing have teamed up to develop AI technology for a new “Wingman” system. This system involves an unmanned fighter aircraft that will operate alongside manned combat jets and take orders from a commanding pilot, likely flying something like a Eurofighter.

Airbus says this Wingman concept aims to boost the German Air Force’s capabilities by integrating uncrewed aircraft that can carry weapons, meeting their rising operational demands.

Mike Schoellhorn, CEO at Airbus Defence and Space, emphasized the importance of air superiority, especially in light of recent conflicts in Europe. He stated, “Manned-Unmanned Teaming will be crucial for achieving air superiority.”

With the addition of an unmanned Wingman, fighter pilots can stay away from dangerous areas. They remain in control and make all critical decisions but leave the risky tasks to the Wingman. These tasks include targeting enemy forces, engaging in electronic warfare, and tricking enemy defenses.

Helsing, an AI and software company in Munich, pointed out the importance of AI and autonomy in unmanned missions. Co-CEO Gundbert Scherf explained, “Even with a human in control, the most dangerous parts of a mission will require a high degree of autonomy and AI.” They believe AI is vital for everything from processing sensor data to optimizing subsystems and managing overall mission systems.

In their partnership, Airbus will bring its knowledge of both manned and unmanned military aircraft, while Helsing will supply advanced mission software, including sensor integration and electronic warfare algorithms.

The agreement was formally signed at the ILA aerospace trade show in Berlin last week.
